Why DIY falls short

Tackle it yourself and you will kill a few here and there. But missing certain areas or breeding sites means the problem carries on and can get worse. The flush and vacuum method

This uses aerosol pesticides with a residual effect to drive cockroaches out of hiding. The aerosol forces them out of cracks and crevices, which makes it possible to vacuum them up. Physically removing the adults, along with any eggs attached to their bodies, cuts the breeding population dramatically. Once the adults are gone, treatment focuses on the stragglers.

Baits and residual sprays

After the flush and vacuum, bait goes into cupboards and, where necessary, a residual spray is applied. The bait attracts whatever is left and targets future hatchlings. Nymphs that emerge consume the bait and carry it back to the nest, spreading it through a domino effect. It takes a few weeks but it is thorough, and it is especially effective in places that are hard to reach.

• Inside stove control panels, where they come out when the appliance heats up

Health and safety

Handling pesticides safely is training, not instinct. Applying sprays or aerosols in confined spaces is hazardous without the right knowledge. Using pesticide inside a stove, for instance, is unsafe, because the chemicals are released into the air when it heats up. Targeted bait is used in sensitive places like that instead.

It usually costs less in the end

DIY looks cheaper, but many people spend more over repeated attempts with over-the-counter products that ultimately fail. Getting it done properly the first time often works out cheaper, and you get advice on keeping them out afterwards.
