Burning wood leaves creosote up the flue. It builds slowly and it’s flammable, and a chimney nobody has swept in a few years is carrying a lot more of it than the owner would guess.

When to do it
Before the burning season rather than in the middle of it.
Once a year if you burn regularly through winter. And if you can’t remember the last time anyone did it, that’s your answer. Come and sit on the list early. Winter books up.

Soot goes everywhere given half a chance, and a sweep that leaves your lounge grey has failed even if the chimney is spotless. The idea is a clean chimney and a room that looks like nobody was ever in it.
